Turner’s Seafood Grill, Melrose, MA

Turner’s Seafood Grill is a long-standing favorite that Bubu returns to time and time again for the atmosphere, service and scrumptious seafood.  Bubu’s preferred time to visit this restaurant is during a snow flurry, when it is extra special to sit at the oyster bar and watch the snow fall in adorable downtown Melrose while listening to a music selection that leans toward jazz and old standards sung by the likes of Ella, Frank and Billie. We have sat in the main restaurant and the small regular bar as well, but nothing compares to the experience at the oyster bar. Walk in, hang a quick right past the fresh seafood market and lobster tanks, and saddle up to the marble bar in front of an island with a row of stainless steel pots and young fellows shucking oysters. These guys are the best; always friendly and helpful. Oysters aren’t Bubu’s cup of tea, but one of the eager employees once coaxed him into trying a sample. Served with a little lemon juice and a smile, shooting down the slimy creature wasn’t so bad.

If you only try one thing on the menu, it absolutely must be the Asian Nachos. Bubu has been ordering these religiously during each visit since he discovered them on the menu. Even the non-seafood lovers in his usual dining crew will indulge in these delectable treats. The Asian nachos consist of fried wontons covered with an Asian slaw blend and sesame crusted tuna sashimi, drizzled with wasabi aioli, topped off with just a smidge of candied ginger, and served with a side of soy sauce. It is salty and sweet and so flavorful with a delightful crunch; a perfect blend of flavors and texture.

As you can see, we couldn’t restrain ourselves and dove in before taking a photo…

A funny thing about the Asian nachos: one of the oyster bar dudes filled us in that these things are a giant pain in the tail to assemble. Since they are made at a small prep station right at the oyster bar, he told us to watch as the order ticket came through to the poor soul on Asian Nachos Duty that day. We all had a chuckle at the irked expression on his fellow oyster dude as he pulled the ticket. Poor guy. Worst of all, once one party orders them everyone at the bar takes notice, setting off an Asian Nachos ordering frenzy. But all of the efforts are well appreciated; this is a dish that is beautiful and delicious.  Warning: you will not look graceful eating these.  Whether you use a fork and knife or go the fingers route, you will make a mess.  Not recommended for stuffy business lunches or first dates.

The menu at the oyster bar is a bit different than the rest of the restaurant menu, geared toward a lighter appetite and quicker meal experience. You can order salads, soups, pastas, and appetizers, but the larger seafood meals and lobsters aren’t available here.  There is plenty on this menu to choose from, so unless you have your heart set on a certain dinner item, it is worth it to sit here for the special experience.  You can order any of the kettle pasta dishes (make your own combination of sauce and seafood) or mussels at the oyster bar and you will see it prepared right in front of you. The salmon dill penne stands out, a decadent pasta dish in a thick and flavorful dill cream sauce.  Other menu favorites include the stuffed clams, lobster mac and cheese (made with orecchiette for a pleasant twist), and hearty crab cakes drizzled with a creamy remoulade.

Turner’s also concocts some creative cocktails, and this recent visit’s special drink was a Maple Manhattan- maple infused Jim Beam, vermouth and a bacon garnish- a sweet and savory treat. Check out this luscious drink below, and you can also see the kettle pots in the background.

Bacon! Swimming in booze!

Turner’s does get very busy on weekends and is closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly.  Bubu has yet to try every item on the menu but at this rate will have accomplished that goal shortly.

Hammersmith Inn, Saugus, MA

The Hammersmith Inn is one of Bubu’s regular neighborhood haunts for breakfast.  When looking for a hearty omelet and a big serving of home fries with the best coffee in town, he rolls out of bed and strolls down to this friendly diner, which is one of those delightful old fashioned places where old men hang out over their coffees for hours.  While known as a breakfast joint, Hammersmith is open until 7 pm most evenings, so on a recent Friday night during a snow storm we decided to venture down to our neighborhood diner to see what the dinner menu might offer.

There was a decent crowd near to “closing time” (about 6:30), and the lights were brightly glowing (no mood lighting here).  Just as bright was our waitress’ smile, a familiar face from the breakfast visits, and we had no doubt she had been there since the morning shift and had sustained her cheery disposition.

The menu had a lot of tempting budget friendly options, including numerous fried seafood dishes, burgers, sandwiches and comfort food classics. We settled on a cheeseburger club and in a game-time decision, the chicken parm.  The cheeseburger club was tasty, but we wished the patties were a bit thicker.  A generous portion including fries, we brought home half for a late night snack.

The chicken parm was an unlikely hit! I know many folks are very discriminating about their Italian specialties, and I don’t claim to be a sauce (“gravy”) connoisseur, but this diner version of the comfort food classic really hit the spot.  Served up with a crisp and fresh house salad, it was the perfect Friday night meal for a snowstorm.

Needless to say, Bubu will continue frequenting this neighborhood gem for breakfast and will most certainly be back for dinner.

P.S.  Not to be confused with Hammersmith House nursing home in Saugus.  Although the nurse staff there seemed amused when we called and asked if they were open for dinner.

Red Stripe Restaurant, Providence, RI

Bubu was en route to Connecticut for a bachelorette party when he grew hungry while passing through Providence.  Lured to the quaint Wayland Square by the promise of a special cheese shop, which sadly turned out to be closed for an extended holiday, Bubu was dejectedly wandering the area when he stumbled on Red Stripe.  The name conjured up images of delicious Jamaican beer and grilled items, but turned out to be a c’est bon surprise.

Grabbing a seat at the bar, we learned that there was no Caribbean jerk fare, rather the Red Stripe was a decidedly bistro style restaurant with a menu boasting French and American classics.  There were many tempting options- including a “pick two” option with various soups, salads and sandwiches for only $8.95.  Our party ordered a grilled cheese with pear and proscuitto served with tomato soup for dipping, and a French classic, the Croque Madame.

Croque Madame

Just look at this scrumptious Croque Madame, oozing with a perfect over medium egg and swimming in Bearnaise sauce.  It was a large serving for such a decadent dish, and luckily the bartender was very willing to swap out french fries for a crisp and delicious house salad.  While we didn’t indulge in the frites, it seems that the Red Stripe name comes from a specialty order of fries made with the Jamaican lager.

Lunch was washed down with a bottle of Super Tuscan and complemented by some great company, enjoying an amusement with the somewhat uppity crowd, including a lady sporting Harry Potter style glasses.  Red Stripe was the perfect unexpected lunch pit stop.

Phu- Ket Thai, Wakefield, MA

Sign inside bathroom door

The restaurant’s name itself elicits middle school-esque giggles from immature folks like us, and some of the signage was questionable.  But Phu-Ket in Wakefield fit the bill when it came to a tasty alfresco dining experience.

Bubu’s requirements are few when it comes to outdoor dining.  The first and only true requirement is that he be able to bring his pet hound dog, Bentley, along with him.  Bentley is sometimes very well behaved and sometimes not well behaved.  When the latter scenario occurs, a quick exit from the establishment’s premises is often required.  Luckily, Bentley was on the well behaved side of things this time so we could sit and relax for some time.  The hosts of the restaurant welcomed him warmly,  and waitstaff was more than patient when Bentley insisted on sniffing everything that was brought to the table.  The other preference Bubu has when going for a bite outdoors is that there be some kind of beer, wine or spirits (because booze just tastes that much better when sipping a cocktail on a balmy evening, doesn’t it?)  Phu-Ket had a surprisingly well rounded selection of wine by the bottle, and we decided on a fuller bodied red to complement the spicy meal we anticipated.

Bubu loves trying as many dishes as possible, so we ordered a bunch of things for the family to share.  We really enjoyed the crisp, fresh salad, juicy tenderloin beef in a savory Thai steak sauce, and an exotic chicken coconut soup that while looked like a bowl of milk, tasted like a tropical delicacy.

Now about the sign on the bathroom door.  We were humorously tickled by A) the grammar mistake and more importantly, B) the need to instruct the restroom user to keep the door shut…you would think that would be a given, no?

Jokes aside, Phu-Ket was an enjoyable experience and we will be sure to return.
